Hong Kong tenancy guide
Hong Kong Tenancy Record Glossary
Understand official searches, combined lookups, name matches, redaction and anonymisation before using Hong Kong rental information.
Quick answer
An official search, platform lookup, possible name match and verified identity describe different things. Redaction hides selected data; anonymisation considers whether the remaining information can identify someone.
Common terms
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Official search | A particular authority’s search and available documents. |
| Combined lookup | Information from several sources with their own limitations. |
| Name match | A lead requiring identity and context checks. |
| No results / source failure | No match returned versus data not obtained. |
| Redaction / anonymisation | Hiding fields versus assessing whether a person remains identifiable. |
Hong Kong terms in overseas searches
A tenancy agreement may also be called a lease. A deposit is not automatically payment of the final rent. “Fixed” and “break” periods are shorthand; the actual contract controls the relevant rights. Do not import overseas notice rules into a Hong Kong tenancy.
